Tobacco & Rose is the medicine-inspired songwriting project of Canadian music veteran Richard Moody.

As a songwriter, Richard counts many influences, varying from Dylan to Bach, Rumi to Ravel. The teachings of Yoga and Buddhism have also influenced the lyrical content of some of the songs. Then a few years back, Richard had the privilege and opportunity to work with some of the psychedelic, medicinal and teaching plants of the Peruvian Amazon and Pacific Northwest. The work with these plants inspired a flood of musical creativity, much of which is featured on the eponymous debut recording from Tobacco & Rose. Richard recounts feeling often like he was not even the primary writer, but that the plants were speaking through him. So the songs reflect a sense of wonder, magic and transcendence, at the same time being grounded in the stylistic tradition of singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s.

A word on the name, which is in no way meant to glorify cigarette smoking. Indigenous peoples have long used the tobacco plant for many reasons, including prayer, connection and protection. Like many master plants it has a dark side, and needs to be used with respect and a sense of reciprocity, and hopefully with a the intention of healing for oneself and others.
